Did you get an allowance as a kid? If yes, wasn’t it so cool and exciting?! You might have gotten it for doing chores around the house (I don’t think they call them chores anymore…) Or, maybe like we did with our kids you got an allowance each week as a way to learn about money. If you received an allowance you likely got to decide how to spend, save, or maybe share it. It was fun, right?
Our kids got an allowance to teach them about spending, saving, and giving. They loved it, and why wouldn’t they! (If you want more resources on kids’ allowances check them out here.)
As we grow older somewhere along the way the idea of an allowance goes from feeling like an abundant flow of money to feeling restrictive like a budget. The feeling of only so much for you…
I think we should bring back the good parts of allowances for grown-ups. The joy of spending. The learning and sense of accomplishment that comes with saving and not spending all at once. The glow of being a generous giver with your money.
There is a freedom and expansiveness that comes with structure. I know for me having a morning routine makes my day flow more smoothly even when unexpected things come up. (More on that in an upcoming blog.) Creating a joy-filled routine around your income can be a helpful reframe. What if you added some excitement and gratitude whenever you get a paycheck or paid by a client? Maybe even do a little happy dance – no one needs to see you! Then deliberately plan, with enjoyment and lightness, how you will spend, save, and give this money.
I remember the fun of counting the money in my piggy bank. My dad also saved his pennies in a big jar.
Hmmm … do you think this might have been a clue that I might lean into being an accountant early in my career? I loved counting money! It can be fun as a grown-up too.
Even if there’s not as much money to count as you’d like, focusing on what you do have is a great way to grow your wealth.
I say, let’s start allowances for grown-ups! But only the fun, expansive, and generous kind.
Every good wish,
Whenever you’re ready …
