Are you going with the current when it comes to money and prosperity or against it?
When my husband Steven did an Ironman competition in Louisville he did really well in the swim portion of the race. Not only because he’s a strong swimmer, but also because the swim was in the Ohio River. And they swam with the current. It made the swim easier and his time faster.
When I’ve been in downtown Chicago walking toward the train station during the morning rush hour (against the flow of commuters) it not only took me longer, but was more stressful and required a lot more energy than if I would have been going with the flow of people.
When it comes to growing your business, dealing with your finances, and thinking about your money are you going with the current or against it?
Against the Current
What does it mean to go against the current with money?
Expectations: Negative –
Do you tend to assume the worst will happen? The economy will take a nose dive. The markets will tumble. Your clients will fire you. Even fleeting thoughts of disaster are pushing you against the flow.
Negative expectations can also show up in negative views and judgements of others. Saying things like “Oh, I can’t believe they did that with their money – they are so materialistic!” Or, feeling a bit envious when something really good happens financially to someone you know. These are against the current thoughts.
Key words: Envy ~ Judgmental ~ Competitive
Energy: Restrictive –
When you’re going against the current your energy is constricted. You might notice feelings of fear and anxiety. Your focus is inward. Your thoughts are all about you. Your outlook is limited. The pie is only so big and you worry about how large your piece is.
Key words: Worry ~ Fear ~ Anxiety ~ Self-critical
Effort: Grasping –
It is hard work going against the current. If you’ve thought “if I could only catch a break” that’s what this can feel like. I’m not saying that when you’re working deliberately it’s always super easy – but there is absolutely no ease, inspiration, or feelings of creativity when you’re in this place. There is also a lot of fighting against what is.
Key words: Asleep ~ Resignation ~ Self-centered
With the Current
How is it when you are flowing with the current?
Expectation: Positive–
When you’re going with the current you believe things will work out, even if you’re not clear how. You approach challenges with a sense of curiosity and creativity. You have a deep knowing that there is good in the world, that things work out in the end and that there is always a way.
Key words: Abundant ~ Trusting ~ Collaborative
Energy: Expansive –
When you’re flowing with the current you are energized. You tend to feel happier, more clear, and generous. You are excited for good financial things happening to others, and these inspire you.
Key words: Generous ~ Encouraged ~ Inspired
Effort: Allowing –
Could you bring more ease to the way you approach money? This isn’t about inaction or passivity. It’s about using the flow to move you ahead. When you stop fighting against what is you are able to find creative, inspiring ideas and solutions.
Key words: Awake ~ Grateful ~ Learning
There are times when all of us are going against the current. When you are more mindful of your thoughts and beliefs about money you are better able to notice this and shift to be going with the current. What I know is that the more time you spend going with the flow with your money, business and thoughts about prosperity the easier it is to go further faster toward your goals.
